Pest Control And Wildlife Management Challenges Of Las Vegas NV

The Las Vegas Valley of Nevada has some unique pest control and wildlife management challenges for property owners not found in other regions of the United States. The same challenges apply to all property owners whether it be, residential, commercial or multi-family housing. The challenges range from pests common to most other areas of the country to those like scorpions that are rarely found in the northern States. A challenge fairly unique to the desert southwest is the need for wildlife management removal and replacement services.

The common Las Vegas pests include:

bedbugs - parasites sucking blood from their donors
ants - nuisance in houses and yards
cockroaches - capable of spreading disease
scorpions - venomous sting can injure humans and pets
venomous spiders - black widow and brown recluse are the predominate species
crickets - more of a problem the sound they make if caught inside walls during construction

The warm year around climate of the Las Vegas Valley is attractive to several rodent species including:

roof rats or black rats - growing number of roof rats gaining access to roofs from overhanging trees
house mice - typically gain access to properties through openings or cracks
pack rats - known for their propensity to gather items and accumulate them in the area they nest

From a Las Vegas wildlife management standpoint, the challenges include:

An increasing problem with Africanized "Killer Bees" swarming in some residential area

Removing bats from attics. Any small gap or open area allows bats access for roosting. The resulting problems include smell from accumulating feces and bacteria harmful to humans but not to bats

Venomous snakes like the rattlesnake are common to the Las Vegas Valley. Some areas near the outer rings of the valley have problems with rattlesnakes close to residential homes or in yards. The typical solution is carefully catching the snake and relocating it to a less populated area.

Removing pigeons from roofs and eves in residential and commercial areas due to the stench and disease carried in their droppings

The numbers of coyotes in the urban areas are increasing especially around golf courses. The coyotes find an abundant food source in the rabbits grazing on and around the golf courses.

Most types of wildlife are protected by Federal or State Government, so cannot be poisoned or trapped. In most cases, wildlife causing problems are caught using means not harmful to the animal and relocated to areas they will not cause a threat to humans or pets. The State of Nevada offers training and certification for pest control companies that offer those types of services.
